The decan system, originating in ancient Egypt, is the oldest astrological classification dividing the zodiac into 36 sections (10Β° each). Each decan has a planetary ruler and unique image. Picatrix (GhΔyat al-αΈ€akΔ«m, 11th century) and Cornelius Agrippa (De Occulta Philosophia, 16th century) are the most important traditional sources, with roots tracing back to Egyptian coffin texts circa 2100 BCE.
Western zodiac has 12 signs (30Β° each), but decans have 36 (10Β° each) β 3 times more precise. Even within the same sign, personality differs greatly depending on which decan you belong to.
